I am not a fan of gatekeeping. But I do understand it. You know what I mean right? You come across a place or something cool and you dont share the knowledge for fear of it getting ruined or going away all together. Well I have come across what I think is an anomaly and I am not proud of briefly thinking about keeping this one to myself. But I am sure many of you, like me might have kids getting close to driving age. Its a question I get with some regularity and for that first car, high school to college part of life what vehicle could possibly be better than a mini truck?
The Ford Ranger.
Why are these things so cheap? I was goofing around on Car gurus looking at various makes and marks as a distraction when for some reason I looked at the Ranger. I couldn’t believe how many low milage examples were out there! Most in two wheel drive extra cab configuration and many priced just under or over ten grand! If you are looking for a commuter or a cheap safe reliable first vehicle a kid could use for years without costing them an arm and a leg to fuel or maintain… what better vehicle than one of the last legit mini trucks available in the US? While I am more of an S10 or S15/Sonoma guy they are far more expensive with in some cases double the miles, at least in the searches I was doing the other day. How long will this trend last? I cant say but if anyone asks me what I recommend for a kids first car. At least in the near future my answer is gonna be "Have you looked at a Ford ranger?"
