It's pouring rain here in Nor Cal. Has been for a few days. For the first time it's been just me and my son on our own. With the rain putting a damper on pretty much any activities we've just been hanging out. Cleaning here and there, cooking together and playing games on his Nintendo Switch. I gotta Abe honest it's been pretty great. In between the cooking, cleaning and gaming we've been watching Anime and came across two I'd recommend checking out.
Dimension W.
When someone says anime this is what you are probably expecting. Futuristic tech, martial arts fights with both robots, guns, cyborgs and blades. The surprise is in the main characters choice of vehicles. I'm not sure if this was an artists preferance or the show was sponsored by Toyota? Either way the main character starts off in the most beautiful body style to come from the land of the rising sun. The Toyota 2000gt it's shockingly well drawn and whileive never heard a 2000gt in person I felt like the engine sounds were pretty great. There's a few scenes where the classic coupe gets a bit roughed up and even though it was a cartoon I was shocked to find myself wincing. Later the.main character switches things up to a Lexus LFA. Imagine that being your daily choices? They got the sounds right on this one as well. it's a fast paced kind of adventure mystery that's worth the watch.
Super Cub.
My second recommendation is a bit different. No fast paced fights, no dystopian future or mysterious villains. Super Cub is the story of one than two than three girls that find themselves through the experiences of owning their Honda Cubs.
"I have no parents, no money, no hobbies, no friends, no real goals but things have changed a bit, is that because I found my cub? No. A cub can't do anything for you on its own. You have to want to do something for yourself first. Something like, turning an unfamiliar corner when you've always gone straight before. It can be as small as that. And when you decide, the cub will help you, there's nothing magical about it. But it will always be by your side."
This section of dialogue from the main character sums up the entire series perfectly. Starting with the first sentence in the first episode. As the series progresses with the buying of and mastering of the Cub through the seasons and modifications and maintenance needed to keep riding throughout the year. The ending of that sentence changes with the above being its final realization. Wether you're a motorcyclist or a car guy you'll most likely recognize the journey and it will remind you of your own struggles. The thrill and excitement of new ownership and the frustrations of trial and error. It's a story about the joy of preserving through the learning curve. There's a scene when the main character, stuck at a mini mart when her Cub won't fire. She suddently remembers and uses the bikes manual to discover the reserve function, boy did that scene bring back a memory! The kind motorcycle shop owner first showing her how to change the oil and then the intimidation of doing it yourself that fist time, boy that took me back.
No it's not fast paced and there's no a karate chops, Kung fu or fantastic powers to be found. It's just a good story. One that reminded me of Hondas old add campain "You meet the nicest people on a Honda" I'd go so far as to change that a bit and say, finding an interest that requires something of you will bring you satisfaction, build self esteem and give you entry to meeting people and building friendships you may otherwise have. Ok, ok it's not as good as the Honda one but I think its more accurate.
If you check either out, let me know what you think.
