I have to admit I am pretty stoked on the Safari movement in general. In California our roads are crap especially if you're in any of our major cities. You know the exact places you'd expect someone who owned a Porsche or Lamborghini to live. By all reports Porsche is selling more of their higher end GT focused cars than the cheaper models Porsche has a long history of rally and off-road racing already. Add to that the current Safari movement thats gained so much momentum as of late and Porchse offering one from the factory makes a lot of sense.
While I haven't yet seen either version in person I have been scouring the interwebs for reviews and articles on them and my excitement for both models grows with each one. Given the option of either Id have to go Porsche. I have a feeling that even the Porsche would be a stretch for me monetarily even just maintenance wise but the thought of having to maintain a Lamborghini for a regular probably sub blue collar guy is laughable at best. No I think the Dakar is the move not only because of its relative reliability but due to the cars overall popularity I feel like I could find a shop that would work with me after the initial warranties have come and gone. While the Porsche may not have the flash of the Lambo that's also partly what I like about it. I feel like even lifted I could drive and park the Porsche with less concern than I would have for the Lamborghini and fig I had something like the Dakar striving town the highest milage version known would be my goal.
As I have said before I genuinely hope for this segments success and through that success its growth. I don't see the infrastructure getting much better here in the "Golden State" any time soon and maybe if these cars sell in high enough volumes other car companies will jump on board. I have seen quite a few Mustang renderings bouncing around the inter webs and as I also previously hypothesized I really can't think of a better American platform to pick up this particular idea and run with it. Imagine a Mustang that could hit a curb and just keep going!?!
Hmm maybe that isn't such a good idea after all?
